Nakshatra Shanti Pooja

About Nakshatra Shanti Pooja

Nakshatra Shanti (Gand Mool Shanti) is a remedial pooja for a newborn born under a Gand Mool or dosha nakshatra — such as Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola or Revati. The birth star can cast a dosha on the child and the family; the shanti pacifies it and invokes blessings for the baby’s health, long life and wellbeing. It is traditionally performed in the early weeks after birth.

How it's performed (vidhi)

  1. 1Select the baby’s birth nakshatra — the prescribed shanti (full shanti, or a specific pada) is determined from it.
  2. 2Sankalpam in the name of the newborn and the family.
  3. 3Punyahavachanam and Kalasha sthapana for purification.
  4. 4The nakshatra-specific shanti japam / homam with the prescribed mantras.
  5. 5Abhishekam for the child (where prescribed), aarti, blessings and prasadam.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatras need a shanti for a newborn?

The Gand Mool and dosha nakshatras — Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola and Revati are the main ones, and several others need a specific pada shanti. You select the baby’s birth star during booking and the prescribed shanti is applied automatically.

When should the Nakshatra Shanti be performed?

Traditionally in the first weeks after birth — often around the 27th day or within a few months. For Ashlesha it is recommended within six months. Your pandit can advise the right time.

Where is it performed, and is the samagri included?

At the temple (Shankeshwar Bazar), online (the pooja is performed at your home over a video call), or in person at home. At the temple the samagri is included; for online and at-home, the family arranges the samagri and the pandit shares a checklist in advance.

Do I need the baby’s exact birth details?

You select the birth nakshatra (and pada if you know it). If you are unsure, the birth date, time and place let an astrologer determine the nakshatra.
