Namakaranam and Aksharabhyasam are two important samskaras (sacraments) in a child’s early life. Namakaranam is the naming ceremony, and Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambham) marks the child’s first step into learning. Both are performed at an auspicious muhurtham to invoke blessings for the child’s future.
Namakaranam (Naming Ceremony / Barasala)
Namakaranam is traditionally performed in the first weeks after birth, when the baby is formally given its name. Vidhi: Ganapathi Pooja, Punyahavachanam, the Naming, and Ashirvachanam. If the baby is born under a Gand Mool nakshatra, the Nakshatra Shanti can be added and performed together with the naming.
Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambham)
Aksharabhyasam is the child’s sacred initiation into learning, invoking Goddess Saraswati for wisdom and knowledge — often done on Vijayadashami or another auspicious day. Vidhi: Ganapathi Pooja, Saraswathi Pooja, Akshara Sweekaram (the child writes the first letters), and Ashirvachanam.
When to perform them
- Namakaranam: typically in the first few weeks after birth, on an auspicious day.
- Aksharabhyasam: usually around age 2–5, often on Vijayadashami / Basant Panchami.
- Use the Vediika Muhurtham finder to pick an auspicious date, confirmed by a pandit.
